Cochlear Anatomy Via Microdissection with Clinical Implications: An Atlas - Rilegato

9783319712215: Cochlear Anatomy Via Microdissection with Clinical Implications: An Atlas

Sinossi

This atlas focuses on selected aspects of cochlear anatomy as illustrated by material prepared by the microdissection technique, a three-dimensional perspective not possible with standard histological approaches. Although much of the material in this text was processed by the microdissection method, photomicrographs from conventionally cross sectioned inner ear tissues and scanning electron microscopy, are also presented. Taken together, these technical approaches provide different, complementary views of inner ear anatomy, and offer a more informative understanding than is possible with any of the methods used alone. While micrographs obtained from microdissected material appear sporadically in journal articles, there is no comprehensive collection of such images currently available. The illustrations assembled in this atlas are complementary to the more traditional histologic images and drawings available in standard texts, and aide in understanding the intricate anatomy of the cochlea.

Cochlear Anatomy via Microdissection with Clinical Implications will be a useful resource for otolaryngologists, anatomists, audiologists, and neuroscientists. Those engaged in cochlear implantation, physicians and researchers in the growing fields of implantable hearing aids and drug delivery to the inner ear, and members of industry involved in designing, manufacturing, and marketing implantable hearing aids will also find this atlas of great value.

Informazioni sull?autore

Charles G. Wright, Ph.D., Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, outhwestern Medical Center at Dallas-Retired (Full CV uploaded to the attachments tab)

Dr. Wright completed doctoral studies in neuroscience at Indiana University and subsequently received postdoctoral training at Kresge Hearing Research Institute, University of Michigan. He was a member of the research faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology-HNS, Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas from 1983 until retirement at the end of 2014.

Dr. Wright’s research activities have focused on anatomy and pathology of the middle and inner ear utilizing a variety of laboratory animal models and human temporal bone material. He has worked extensively on microstructure of the auditory and vestibular sensory organs of the inner ear. A major emphasis of his recent work has been on study of the human temporal bone in relation to cochlear implantation, especially with regard to inner ear trauma associated with cochlear implant surgery.

Peter S. Roland, M.D., Professor Emeritus, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (Full CV uploaded to the attachments tab)

(University bio) Dr. Roland is currently Professor Emeritus and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Professor of Neurological Surgery, both at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He is Chief of Pediatric Otology at Children’s Medical Center. Dr. Roland regularly performs surgical procedures at Zale Lipshy University Hospital, St. Paul Hospital and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. He is a member of over 20 hospital committees. He chairs five committees: the Quality Assurance/Medical Records Committee of Zale Lipshy University Medical Center; the Ethics Committee for Zale Lipshy University Hospital; the Committee on Physician Health and Rehabilitation for Parkland Memorial Hospital; the HIPAA Compliance Committee for the Southwestern University Medical Center; and the Managed Care Contracting Committee. Dr. Roland has completed a fellowship in otology, neurotology and skull base surgery and his practice is limited to that subspecialty. He deals with problems in hearing, ear disease, balance disturbance, facial nerve injury and tumors of the skull base including acoustic neuroma. He has a special interest and much experience in the area of cochlear implantation. Dr. Roland completed graduate coursework in Philosophy at the University of Texas in 1972. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and did his otolaryngology residency training at Penn State University. Dr. Roland spent four years in the United States Navy stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. During his tour in the Navy, he was on the faculty of the Uniform Services, the University of Health Sciences and served as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health. Following his four year tour in the Navy, he spent a year in fellowship training at the E.A.R. Institute in Nashville, Tennessee specializing in otology, neurotology and skull base surgery. He is the author of over 150 publications on ear surgery, cochlear implants, hearing loss, balance disturbance, facial nerve injury, acoustic neuroma and tumors of the skull base.
