Per molto tempo la Lettera di Giacomo è stata giudicata principalmente in relazione a Paolo. Ciò oscurava la vista sul proprio profilo distinto. La ricerca degli ultimi tre decenni ha riabilitato l'epistola che non è così secca come la sua caratterizzazione da Lutero come suggerisce un'epistola come la paglia. Giacomo, persona altrimenti sconosciuta nella tradizione ecclesiale, scrive una lettera paraenetica insegnando alle comunità cristiane nel suo ambiente a perseguire la strada che è stata loro mostrata nella fede, aggrappandosi alla parola di verità e rifiutando il Dio che si oppone al mondo. Egli sostiene con passione una vita determinata nella fede e nella pratica allo stesso modo dalla sapienza di Dio. Disegna un quadro di un cristianesimo pratico con una chiara etica sociale ma non senza competenza teologica. L'epistola mostra solo pochi tratti del suo contesto locale e storico, ma ci sono alcune prove che sia stata scritta a Roma non prima dell'inizio del II secolo.

James, a person otherwise unknown in the ecclesial tradition, writes a paraenetic letter teaching the Christian communities in his setting to pursue the path which has been shown to them in faith, clinging to the word of truth and rejecting the God opposing world. Passionately he advocates a life which is determined in faith and practice likewise by the wisdom of God. He draws a picture of a practical Christianity with clear social ethics but not without theological competence. The epistle displays only few traits of its local and historical context, but there is some evidence that it was written in Rome not before the beginning of the second century.
