Henning Mankell, geboren 1948 in Härjedalen, war einer der großen schwedischen Gegenwartsautoren, von Lesern rund um die Welt geschätzt. Sein Werk wurde in über vierzig Sprachen übersetzt, es umfasst etwa vierzig Romane und zahlreiche Theaterstücke. Nicht nur sein Werk, sondern auch sein persönliches Engagement stand im Zeichen der Solidarität. Henning Mankell lebte abwechselnd in Schweden und Mosambik, wo er künstlerischer Leiter des Teatro Avenida in Maputo war. Er starb am 5. Oktober 2015 in Göteborg. Seine Taschenbücher erscheinen bei dtv.
