Fritz J. Raddatz nannte ihn einen «Kaltnadelradierer der Poesie, schmucklos, scharf ritzend, aber nicht ätzend … ein besessener Aufklärer, wo er die Täter am Werk sieht, ob Diktatoren oder Shareholder.» Rolf Hochhuth war einer der erfolgreichsten Dramatiker des heutigen Theaters – mit sicherem Gespür für brisante Stoffe und Themen. Am 1. April 1931 in Eschwege geboren, erzielte er mit dem «christlichen Trauerspiel» Der Stellvertreter Internationalen Erfolg. Es thematisiert die Rolle der katholischen Kirche, speziell die von Papst Pius XII., im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Als rigoroser «Moralist und Mahner» setzte sich Hochhuth mit aktuellen politisch-sozialen Fragen auseinander; in einer Vielzahl offener Briefe plädierte er für die «moralische Erneuerung» der Politik. Er verfasste ein umfangreiches dramatisches, essayistisches und lyrisches Werk. Ausgezeichnet wurde er u.a. mit dem Kunstpreis der Stadt Basel (1976), dem Geschwister-Scholl-Preis (1980), dem Lessing-Preis der Freien Hansestadt Hamburg (1981), dem Elisabeth-Langgässer-Preis (1990) und dem Jacob-Grimm-Preis für Deutsche Sprache (2001). Hochhuth starb am 13. Mai 2020 in Berlin.
