Die Urteile über ihn reichen von der Einreihung unter die Klassiker, der Verwechslung seiner Dramen und Gedichte mit denen des jungen Goethe durch die Zeitgenossen, bis zur Verdammung. Die Gefährten in Straßburg sahen in ihm das Genie, den "Kerl"; mit Goethe tauschte er das Prädikat des Bruders. Heinrich Leopold Wagner, Friedrich Maximilian Klinger und der junge Schiller ahmten ihn nach. Lavater und Herder haben ihn nach Kräften gefördert. Hamann hat sich für ihn interessiert. In Moskau suchte Nikolaj M. Karamsin seine Freundschaft und reiste auf seinen Spuren nach Mitteleuropa.
