The study of phenomena at solid surfaces is of greatimportance in physics, because a solid sample is always incontact with other media via its surface. "Concepts inSurface Physics" provides a tutorial treatment of the mainconcepts of the physics of crystal surfaces. Emphasis isplaced on simplified calculations - and the correspondingdetailed analytical derivations - that are able to throwlight on the most important physical mechanisms. Morerigorous techniques, which often require a large amount ofcomputer time, are also explained. Theory is compared withexperimentwhere possible, with the experimental methodsbeing described from a theoretical rather than a technicalviewpoint. Topics treated include thermodynamic andstatistical properties of clean and absorbate coveredsurfaces, atomic structure, vibrational properties, electronic structure, and the theory of physisorption andchemisorption.
