Die Zahl diagnostizierter Autisten steigt in den letzten Jahren stark an. Gleichzeitig haben Autisten sowohl eine reduzierte gesundheitsbezogene Lebensqualität, als auch ein stark erhöhtes Sterblichkeitsrisiko, wie eine aktuelle Studie zeigt. Trotzdem kommen Autisten nur selten als Patienten in Arztpraxen. Dies liegt vor allem an unsichtbaren Barrieren, die den Zugang zu medizinischer Versorgung für Autisten zumindest erschweren - wenn nicht gar unmöglich machen. Diese Barrieren sichtbar zu machen und Wege zum Abbau aufzuzeigen ist ein zentrales Ziel dieses Buches. Zusätzlich erfordert auch die Anamnese, Diagnose und Behandlung von Autisten ein spezifisches Vorgehen. Deshalb werden die Ursachen und Wirkzusammenhänge vieler Erkrankungen bei Asperger Autisten dargestellt.
