Die Pflanze ist anders als Mauerwerk oder Beton ein lebender Baustoff, der sich im Laufe der Jahreszeiten und Jahre verändert. Die unterschiedliche Erscheinung und das Wachstum sind Faktoren, die bei Entwurf und Planung berücksichtigt werden müssen.
Darüber hinaus können mit Pflanzen verschiedene Gestaltungsebenen geschaffen werden. Sie dienen der Verkleidung (Fassadenbegrünung, Bodenbelag, Rasen) und der Raumbildung in unterschiedlichen Höhen (Hecke, Strauch, Baum etc.).
