Stand was a 2012 site-specific installation by Robert Longo (born 1953) which fully utilized the unique architecture of the Capitain Petzel gallery in Berlin. The building was shrouded with an enormous monochrome depiction of the American flag. Upon entering the gallery, the viewer was immediately confronted with a large charcoal drawing. This was flanked by two drawings: one depicted a mass of Occupy Wall Street protesters; the other, a lone American soldier walking toward an uncertain and ominous future. With the consent of the artist, Longo also updated the style and content of Hans Haacke's Oelgemaelde, Hommage à Marcel Broodthaers (1982). He replaced Ronald Reagan, opposite an image of a crowd protesting the deployment of American missiles in Bonn, with President Obama, facing Tea Party protestors. The remainder of the gallery exhibited a group of 25 drawings and featured a performance based upon the classic American novel Moby Dick.

Bei der Ausstellung STAND handelte es sich um eine ortsbezogene Installation von Robert Longo, mit welcher er die Architektur der Berliner Galerie Capitain Petzel 2012 auf spektakuläre Weise auflud. Die Glasfassade des Gebäudes war von einem riesigen Schwarz-Weiß-Fragment der US-Flagge abgedeckt. Beim Betreten der Räume wurde der Betrachter mit einer großformatigen Kohlezeichnung der gesamten Flagge als Grundlage für die Außengestaltung konfrontiert. Robert Longo (Jg. 1953) flankierte diese US Flagge mit zwei weiteren Großformaten, auf der einen Seite unzählige Occupy-Wall-Street-Demonstranten aus der Vogelperspektive, auf der anderen Seite ein einsamer US Soldat, der einer ungewissen Zukunft entgegengeht. In der Haupthalle der Galerie befand sich Longos aktualisierte Version von Hans Haackes »Ölgemälde, Hommage à Marcel Broodthaers« (1982). Anstelle des Öl-Porträts von Ronald Reagan gegenüber einer Fotografie der Massendemonstration in Bonn gegen die Stationierung der Pershing II-Raketen zeigte er Präsident Obama als fotorealistische überlebensgroße Zeichnung gegenüber einem Groß-Tableau von Mitgliedern der radikalen Tea-Party-Bewegung. Longo had major retrospective exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1989 and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago in 1990, a touring exhibition throughout Japan in 1995, and more recently a "Survey Exhibition 1980-2009," at Musee D'Art Moderne Et D'Art Contemporain de Nice in France in 2009 and at Museu Colecção Berardo in Lisbon, Portugal in 2010. He was born in New York City's Brooklyn and lives and works on the East Coast. He has exhibited his thought-provoking drawings in New York, Texas, Milan, Munich, Naples, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Paris and Tokyo, as well as many other United States galleries. To create works, Longo projects photographs of his subjects onto paper and traces the figures in graphite, removing all details of the background. After he records the basic contours, his long-time illustrator, Diane Shea, works on the figure for about a week, filling in the details. Next he goes back into the drawing, using graphite and charcoal to provide "all the cosmetic work".
