He has served as director of a number of museums, including the Lenbachhaus, Munich, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf, and the Brandhorst Collection in Munich. He is the author of seminal books on Barnett Newman, Jackson Poll0ck, Richard Serra, and others.
