Die mittelenglischen Totenklagen, ein qualitativ wie quantitativ bedeutsames Genre, wurden bisher kaum beachtet. Vorliegende Arbeit geht von einem Totenklagetypus aus, den sie anhand des weiterentwickelten Modells der Einfachen Form expliziert, und untersucht die mittelenglischen Totenklagen in ihrem soziokulturellen Kontext; als konventionelle Form, die in einem komplexen, viele Jahrhunderte zurückreichenden Traditionszusammenhang steht; als dichterische Höhepunkte bei Chaucer und im «Morte Arthure»; sowie als wichtigen Einfluss auf die Literatur der frühen Neuzeit.
