Dr. Martin Hepp promovierte bei Prof. Dr. Rainer Thome am Lehrstuhl für Betriebswirtschaftslehre und Wirtschaftsinformatik an der Universität Würzburg. Er ist als Assistant Professor für Computer Information Systems am College of Business der Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida tätig.

Die maschinengeeignete Kodierung von betriebswirtschaftlichen Sachverhalten ist zwingend notwendig, wenn Handelsprozesse an Computersysteme delegiert werden. Während herstellerbezogene Kodierungen für zahlreiche Warenarten bereits seit längerer Zeit existieren, befinden sich generische, herstellerunabhängige Standards für Produkte und Dienstleistungen erst im Aufbau.
Martin Hepp zeigt, welche enorme Bedeutung einer herstellerneutralen, maschinengeeigneten Sprache für die Wirtschaftsinformatik zukommt und inwieweit vorhandene Ansätze wie eCl@ss, UNSPSC und eOTD als Grundlage dafür dienen können. Aus der Analyse der linguistischen Dynamik exemplarischer Branchen leitet er die Notwendigkeit ab, solche Standards teilautomatisiert zu pflegen, und beschreibt einen Prototypen, der dies mit Hilfe wissensbasierter Verfahren leistet.
Das Buch wurde 2004 ausgezeichnet mit dem Dissertationspreis der SEL Alcatel Stiftung sowie dem Dissertationspreis der Unterfränkischen Gedenkjahrstiftung für Wissenschaft.
