Alle Teilsysteme sind in ein integriertes Unternehmensmodell (Referenzmodell) mit
verbalen Beschreibungen, tabellarischen Übersichten und Funktionsbäumen eingeordnet.
Der Datenaustausch zwischen den betriebswirtschaftlichen und den technischen
Programmen ist ebenso berücksichtigt wie der zwischenbetriebliche Datenverkehr
(„E-Business“). Das Buch enthält ferner grundsätzliche Überlegungen zu Typen, Zielen,
Konzeptionsregeln und besonderen Problemen der integrierten Informationsverarbeitung,
zu Architekturen sowie eine Fülle praktischer Beispiele. Wegen der weltweiten
Bedeutung wird vielfach auf SAP-Systeme Bezug genommen.
Der IT-Praktiker wird das Werk auch als Checkliste heranziehen, um die Vollständigkeit
seines „Generalbebauungsplans“ zu überprüfen und Nutzeffekte zu erkennen.
Die Funktionsbeschreibungen eignen sich zur Vertiefung des betriebswirtschaftlichen
Wissens von Studenten.
In der 18. Auflage wurden neue Erkenntnisse zu Anwendungssystemen in Wissenschaft
und Praxis berücksichtigt, die rund 70 Praxisbeispiele aktualisiert und ergänzt und
einige ältere Beispiele durch neuere ersetzt.
