La celebrata tradizione dell’illustrazione botanica risale al Rinascimento. Scaturì dal desiderio di catalogare la natura nel suo imprevedibile splendore. Un tale proposito richiedeva il lavoro degli artisti più precisi e talentuosi.
Grazie alla sua straordinaria capacità di catturare i soggetti più intricati presenti in natura, Pierre-Joseph Redouté è ampiamente considerato il più grande pittore e incisore dell’arte dell’illustrazione botanica. La scelta di lavorare con piante vive anziché con gli esemplari degli erbari ha conferito ai suoi acquarelli un’inconsueta delicatezza e freschezza. Innovatore delle tecniche di stampa, introdusse in Francia l’“incisione a punti” e non smise mai di perfezionare l’accuratezza della sua arte. Redouté ebbe la fortuna di conquistare il favore di alcuni dei più facoltosi mecenati dell’epoca, tra cui Maria Antonietta e l’imperatrice Giuseppina Bonaparte che finanziarono e divulgarono il suo lavoro.
La sua imponente collezione comprende più di 2000 dipinti di piante illustrate con grande meticolosità e massima fedeltà alla natura. In questa raffinata edizione di Les Roses, Redouté volge l’attenzione al fiore in assoluto più romantico, desiderabile ed evocativo. H. Walter Lack è professore presso la Freie Universität di Berlino e fino all’agosto 2014 è stato direttore dell’Orto Botanico e Museo Botanico di Berlino, nel quartiere di Dahlem. Autorevole esperto di storia della botanica, si occupa principalmente delle ripercussioni del trasferimento globale di piante utili e ornamentali dal punto di vista della storia della cultura.
