In contrast to the notion of trust, which has become popular as a social phenomenon in the social sciences of late, the notion of mistrust is mostly overlooked. If at all, mistrust is investigated as the flip side of trust, as an annoying absence and a societal failure. The most pressing question always seems to be how to restore trust in the state, as well as how to foster trust in civil agents and free markets. The contributors intend to take a step back and explore what people actually do when they mistrust. Particular attention is paid to how mistrust relates to detachment, suspicion, and doubt as well as to social complexity.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Scholars have long seen trust as a foundational social good. We therefore have ample studies on building trust in free markets, on cultivating trust in the state, and on rebuilding trust through civil society. The contributors to this volume, instead, take a step back. They ask: Can mistrust ever be more than the flip side of trust, more than the sign of an absence or failure? By looking ethnographically at what a variety of actors actually do when they express mistrust, this volume offers a richly empirical trove of the social life of mistrust across a range of settings. Mistrust is usually treated as an annoying absence and a societal failure. This book takes a step back and explores what people actually do when they mistrust.
