»Dimensions. Journal of Architectural Knowledge« is an academic journal in, on, and from the discipline of architecture, addressing the creation, constitution, and transmission of architectural knowledge. It explores methods genuine to the discipline and architectural modes of interdisciplinary methodological adaptions. Processes, procedures, and results of knowledge creation and practice are esteemed coequally, with particular attention to the architectural design and epistemologies of aesthetic practice and research.
Dimensions Issue 07/2024, edited by Eva-Maria Ciesla, Susanne Hauser, Hannah Strothmann, and Julia Weber, aims to initiate a discussion on the potentials and limitations of »Architecture as Intervention« in an era when architecture faces unprecedented global challenges. Viewing architecture through the lens of intervention positions it as a transformative tool or catalyst for change. Eva-Maria Ciesla is an architect, designer and researcher. Since 2022, she has been a doctoral researcher at Freie Universität Berlin as part of the Collaborative Research Centre 1512 Intervening Arts. Her doctoral project investigates the potential of intervention of improvisational and open processes in architectural design practices since the 1960s.
Susanne Hauser has been a professor of art history and cultural studies in the architecture program at Universität der Künste Berlin since 2005. Together with Julia Weber, she is leading the project on »Architectural Interventions« at the Collaborative Research Centre 1512 Intervening Arts. Her long-term research interests include the role of formalization and media in architectural design processes, the relationship between identity and heritage in European cities and the relevance of »places« in urban design.
Hannah Strothmann is an architect, urban historian, researcher, and writer. She is a doctoral researcher at the Collaborative Research Centre 1512 Intervening Arts at Universität der Künste Berlin, where she is also a guest lecturer. Her research interests lie in the social implications of architecture and ideas of designing, contested urban spaces, and water environments.
Julia Weber is a professor of comparative literature at the Peter Szondi Institute at Freie Universität Berlin. Together with Susanne Hauser, she is leading the project on »Architectural Interventions« at the Collaborative Research Centre 1512 Intervening Arts. Her ongoing research interests encompass cultural approaches to space and architecture, experimental forms of writing, psychotechnics, and the cultural history of virtuality.
