Medical Informatics is defined as an interdisciplinary field studying the effective use of biomedical data, information and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving, and decision making, motivated by efforts to improve human health. To emphasize the broad character it is called Biomedical Informatics. The course LV 444.152 consists of the following 12 lectures: 1. Introduction: Computer Science meets Life Sciences, challenges and future directions; 2. Back to the future: Fundamentals of Data, Information and Knowledge; 3. Structured Data: Coding, Classification (ICD, SNOMED, MeSH, UMLS); 4. Biomedical Databases: Acquisition, Storage, Information Retrieval and Use; 5. Semi structured and weakly structured data; 6. Multimedia Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery; 7. Knowledge and Decision: Cognitive Science and Human-Computer Interaction; 8. Biomedical Decision Making: Reasoning and Decision Support; 9. Intelligent Information Visualization and Visual Analytics; 10. Biomedical Information Systems and Medical Knowledge Management; 11. Biomedical Data: Privacy, Safety and Security 12. Methodology for Information Systems: System Design, Usability and Evaluation

Andreas Holzinger is head of the Research Unit HCI4MED, Institute of Medical Informatics, Medical University Graz; Assoc. Prof. of Applied Information Processing at the Institute of Information Systems and Computer Media, Faculty of Informatics, Graz University of Technology and chair of the Workgroup Human-Computer Interaction and Usability Engineering (HCI&UE) of the Austrian Computer Society (OCG). Since November 2009 he is Austrian Representative in the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP), Technical Committee TC 13 Human-Computer Interaction HCI. Andreas was Visiting Professor in Berlin, Innsbruck, Vienna and London. He is author of fourteen books and author and editor of 252 publications (May 2010). http://hci4all.at Andreas Holzinger leitet die Forschungseinheit HCI4MED am Institut für Medizinische Informatik der Medizinischen Universität Graz, ist Universitätsdozent für angewandte Informationsverarbeitung am Institut für Informationssysteme und Computer Medien, Fakultät für Informatik der TU Graz und leitet den Arbeitskreis Human-Computer Interaction & Usability Engineering (HCI&UE) der Österreichischen Computer Gesellschaft (OCG). Seit November 2009 ist er Österreichs Repräsentant in der International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP), Technical Committee TC 13 Human-Computer Interaction HCI.
