Ein Buch müsse die Axt sein »für das gefrorene Meer in uns«, forderte Franz Kafka einmal – nur wenige Werke der Weltliteratur kommen diesem Motto so nahe wie der letzte der drei großen Romane des Prager Dichters: Eines Nachts gelangt der Landvermesser K. in ein Dorf, dessen Geschicke von einer geheimnisvollen Macht, dem Schloß, gelenkt werden. Er ersucht dort um eine Anstellung, die ihm jedoch verwehrt wird. Der Grund für diese Ablehnung bleibt ebenso im Dunkeln wie die Natur des ominösen Schlosses und K. beginnt einen aussichtslos scheinenden Kampf um seine Anerkennung.

Franz Kafka wurde am 3. Juli 1883 als Sohn eines jüdischen Kaufmanns in Prag geboren. Von 1901 bis 1906 studierte er zunächst kurze Zeit Germanistik, dann Jura und promovierte zum Dr. jur. Nach einer einjährigen »Rechtspraxis« ging er 1907 zu den »Assicurazioni Generali« und ein Jahr später als Jurist zur »Arbeiter-Unfall-Versicherungs-Anstalt«, wo er bis zu seiner Pensionierung im Jahre 1922 blieb. Ende 1917 erlitt Franz Kafka einen Blutsturz, es war der Beginn einer Tuberkulose, an der er am 3. Juni 1924 starb.
