Der amerikanische Künstler R. B. Kitaj war in den 1960er-Jahren einer der Wegbereiter einer neuen figürlichen Kunst, gemeinsam mit seinen Künstlerfreunden Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud und Leon Kossoff. Zehn Jahre später, seit Mitte der 1970er-Jahre, positionierte sich Kitaj als jüdischer Künstler und verstand sich als Initiator einer jüdischen Kunst der Moderne. Diesen Aspekt im Gesamtwerk Kitajs gilt es in seiner Bedeutung neu zu entdecken. Charakteristisch für das gesamte Werk sind eine starke Farbigkeit und ein Reichtum an Motiven und Bildzitaten, der die Gemälde rätselhaft erscheinen lässt.
