Runa Islam’s films are replete with vivid images that enthrall the viewer with their poetry. Using and reflecting on the medium of film is a pivotal part of her work. In detailed interviews with the artist, this book sheds light on her work during the last five years.
Runa Islam was born in Bangladesh in 1970 and today lives in London. She deconstructs linear narrative patterns and time sequences, making the act of seeing—both watching and recognizing what is seen—the central focus of her films. In 2008, Islam was nominated for the Turner Prize for visual art.

In her new work, InselWesen, Mila Teshaieva brings us to the inner world of the Föhr Island, whose inhabitants keep an almost sacred connection to their traditions and to nature. This connection is also complex: once an isolated spot in the North Sea, the island is now trying to protect its unique identity from assimilation and disappearance. Developing the work over the course of two years as Artist-in-Residence at the Museum Kunst der Westku¨ste, Föhr, the artist interacted closely with islanders and was accepted into the inner circles of island life. Created in a style reminiscent of old paintings, the work forms the island as an imaginary world, at the same time underlining a touching fragility of its real essence.
Mila Teshaieva (b. 1974 in Ukraine) is an award-winning photographer living in Berlin. Her photographs have been exhibited worldwide, with recent shows at the Haggerty Museum of Art and the Museum Kunst der Westku¨ste, and are kept in several public and private collections. InselWesen is her second book at Kehrer Verlag, following Promising Waters (2013).
