Thomas Ruff(born 10 February 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach) is an internationally renowned German photographer who lives and works in Düsseldorf.Ruff studied photography from 1977 to 1985 with Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf Art Academy), where fellow students included the photographers Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Reinhard Mucha, Klaus Rinke, Thomas Struth, Angelika Wengler, and Petra Wunderlich. Ruff names Walker Evans, Eugène Atget, Karl Blossfeld, Stephen Shore and William Eggleston as his main influences. From 2000 to 2005 Ruff taught Photography at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Ruff has exhibited widely, e.g. Documenta 9, the Venice Biennale (1995 and 2005).

Der Katalog nimmt besonders vier Serien aus Thomas Ruffs Oeuvre in den Fokus: Die Serie Sterne, zwischen 1989 und 1992 entstanden, die zycles von 2007, die Serie cassini von 2008/2009 und aktuelle Arbeiten aus der Serie ma.r.s. Schon seit 1989 hat Thomas Ruff die eigene Produktion von Fotografien zugunsten der Arbeit mit vorhandenem Material zurückgestellt. Die Beschäftigung mit strukturellen und inhaltlichen Fragestellungen des Mediums steht im Mittelpunkt seines Werks. Ausgangsmaterial für alle gezeigten Fotografien war wissenschaftliches Bildmaterial, das zum Teil frei zugänglich im Internet zur Verfügung steht. Während der Eingriff Thomas Ruffs bei der Serie sterne nur im Bereich des gewählten Bildausschnitts lag, bearbeitete er das Ausgangsmaterial der neueren Serien stärker: Für die Serien cassini und ma.r.s. verwendete Thomas Ruff Aufnahmen verschiedener NASA-Missionen. Er bearbeitete sie digital, ergänzte die Farben, manipulierte Kontraste und Bildausschnitte. Die ursprünglich sachlichen, schwarz-weißen Aufnahmen erhalten durch Ruffs Farbbearbeitung einen neuen Charakter: Es sind malerisch wirkende, ästhetisierte Bilder, die in ihrer abstrakten Schönheit zu Projektionsflächen unserer Vorstellungen werden. 144 pp. Deutsch, Englisch. In over two dozen series, he has explored and defined the boundaries of the medium of photography like no other contemporary artist. The catalog focuses particularly on four series from Thomas Ruff's oeuvre: the "Sterne" series, created between 1989 and 1992, the "zycles" series from 2007, the "cassini" series from 2008/2009, and current works from the "ma.r.s." series. Since 1989, Thomas Ruff has put aside his own photographic production in favor of working with existing material. The exploration of structural and content-related issues of the medium is at the heart of his work. The source material for all of the photographs shown was scientific imagery, some of which is freely available online. While Thomas Ruff's intervention in the "sterne" series was limited to the selected image detail, he reworked the source material of the more recent series more extensively: For the "cassini" and "ma.r.s." series, Thomas Ruff used images from various NASA missions.
