Following Arnold Odermatt’s Karambolage, On Duty and Off Duty, all published by Steidl, Let’s call it a day presents more rediscovered masterpieces by this remarkable selftaught photographer, who trained himself primarily through his duties as a policeman in the small, secluded Swiss canton of Nidwalden. Odermatt thus developed an unconventional artistic fingerprint, which served him well during his working days as well as after hours. Whenever off duty, Odermatt often volunteered to take pictures throughout Nidwalden. He photographed his motifs usually only once, developed prints on demand and then archived them in his attic―all was preserved but ignored. Luckily, the photographer’s son has rescued these treasures and ensured their publication. Let’s call it a day is the fourth volume in a series of books that brings into focus this extraordinary work.

Neu -Nach »Karambolage«, »Im Dienst« und »In zivil« geht es bei Arnold Odermatt nun erst richtig los: Feierabend zeigt wiederentdeckte Meisterwerke eines Fotografen, der sein Handwerk und seinen Blick in der geschlossenen Welt Nidwaldens maßgeblich an den Aufgaben seines Polizeidienstes schulte - Aufgaben, die er zum Teil selbst definierte. So entstand eine singuläre, gestalterische Handschrift, die sich auf Arbeit wie in zivil bewährte und ihm auch nach Feierabend gute Dienste leistete. Nach der letzten Streife warteten ehrenamtliche Fotoaufträge aus allen elf Gemeinden des Kantons auf Arnold Odermatt. Es sind Motive, die oft nur ein einziges Mal fotografiert, nach Bedarf entwickelt und dann vergessen wurden. So ist über die Jahrzehnte auf dem heimischen Dachboden ein Fotoarchiv entstanden, das womöglich irgendwann entsorgt worden wäre, hätte es der Sohn des Fotografen, Urs Odermatt, nicht wiederentdeckt.
