The iridescent glass made by Josef Emil Schneckendorf (1865-1949) was much admired by his contemporaries: they were forced to concede that it boasted 'colours of a magnificence and brilliance' that had not previously been achieved in the production of fine glass. Under the spell of Jugendstil as well as the creations of Tiffany, Koepping and Lötz, Schneckendorf was introduced to art glass in Munich. The amazing technical achievement of artificially reproducing the decomposition processes that left ancient glass buried in the soil with a layer of iridescence, sparked a boom in the late nineteenth century: iridescence, lustre and metallic reflections came to loom large in fine glass making. In 1907 Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke Hesse, founded the Großherzogliche Edelglasmanufaktur as a branch of the Darmstadt artists' colony and appointed Schneckendorf as director. Left largely to his own devices, Schneckendorf was free to apply the techniques he had developed. Luxury glass, remarkable for gleaming tints and often silky textures unparalleled elsewhere, emerged from onerous processes. The fine glass factory operated at a loss and had to shut down by 1911. The few years between 1907 and 1911 saw the production of very few vases, perhaps 100, which are today counted among the most exquisite examples of German Jugendstil glass. Text in German.
