Als begabter Fotojournalist begann Clark seine Karriere 1929 bei der tennesseanischen Zeitung The Tennessean in Nashville und arbeitete anschließend 22 Jahre lang für die Zeitschrift Life. Er fotografierte viele der wichtigsten Aufträge von Life während der Zeit der größten kulturellen Wirkung des Magazins; Clarks Bilder trugen dazu bei, das Selbst- und Weltgefühl einer Nation zu formen. Zu seinem breiten Themenspektrum gehören die Nürnberger Kriegsverbrecherprozesse, der Bürgerrechtskonflikt in den späten 1940er und frühen 50er Jahren, Hollywood-Stars und die Filmindustrie der 50er Jahre, die Menschen und Künste der Sowjetunion und das Weiße Haus während der Eisenhower- und Kennedy-Regierung.
