Written in the 1930s, it was first published in 1941 by Shanghai Kaiming Bookstore. The first half of the work presents a narrative history of the Pre-Qin period in chronological order, beginning with the legendary accounts of creation and concluding with the Qin conquest of the six states. The second half offers a thematic treatment of social and economic institutions, political systems, and academic and religious developments during the Pre-Qin era. The author also demonstrates considerable expertise in such areas as historical materials of antiquity, the chronology of early China, the origins and westward migration of the Chinese people, the territorial boundaries of ancient states, and the systems of official and private education.
