Qiong Yao, originally named Chen Zhe, was born in Chengdu, Sichuan in 1938 and came from a scholarly family. In 1949, she followed her father Chen Zhiping from mainland China to Taiwan to start her writing career, and later entered the film and television production industry.

琼瑶十六岁时以心如为笔名发表小说《云影》,二十五岁时出版了第一部小说《窗外》。多年来,笔耕不辍,代表作有《烟雨濛濛》《还珠格格》《一帘幽梦》《庭院深深》等,并有多部经典作品被改编为电影、电视剧,影响至深,成为一代人的青春回忆。
