In the 1680s, Ebenezer Cooke, a naïve poet who knew nothing about worldly affairs, was granted the title of Maryland Poet Laureate by feudal lord of Maryland. Later he went to take charge of his fathers tobacco plantation in Maryland by ship and decided to write down the local history. There he started his odyssey. He was captured at first by pirates and later by Indians. Then he was fooled and lost the land. He fell in love with a woman who was once a prostitute and almost lost the virginity he had long been protecting. Later he met a group of evil characters whose identities were always changing. His ideal was disillusioned facing with the cattiness and cruelty of the reality. What he wrote down in the end was not a grand ode but an ironic full-length poem.
