《三国志》记载了从汉献帝初平元年（190年），军阀混战起，前后共计九十年的历史。
《三国志》继《史记》、《汉书》而作，成书则在《后汉书》以前。司马迁的《史记》是通史体，班固的《汉书》是断代史体，《三国志》把三国分成三书，魏书三十卷，蜀书十五卷，吴书二十卷，共六十五卷，在断代史中别创一格。
《三国志译注》对陈寿《三国志》的全本65卷，进行白话的翻译和注释。其基本性质，是具有坚实学术基础的普及性读物。
