This book is an attempt to provide a unified presentation of the modern nonlinear mechanics of structures. The authors' intention is to tie together within a coherent framework different subjects constituting the vast field of contemporary structural mechanics. The book is divided into two parts. Part I forms a wide-ranging introduction, which starts with the fundamental postulates of nonlinear continuum mechanics. This is followed by a thorough and highly original discussion of different engineering theories describing typical structural configurations, the approach being consistently based upon the concept of certain imaginary constraints imposed on deformations and/or stresses of the 3D material continuum. Special types of constraints are shown to yield formulations typical of the finite element method, which can be directly used for a numerical analysis of boundary-value problems of almost any complexity. In this way the book provides an introductory treatment of the nonlinear computational machanics of structures. Part II is devoted to selected applications of the general approach discussed in Part I. It includes exemplary nonlinear analyses and critical discussions of several complex structural configurations, such as 2D and 3D trusses and frames, lattice-type shells, perforated thin plates loaded in-plane and axisymmetric shells. Inelastic, temperature, large displacement and stability effects as well as monotonic and cyclic loadings are considered.
