Malgrado la chiusura sopraggiunta con la rivoluzione khomeinista del 1979, l'Iran rimane un contesto molto ricco dal punto di vista dell'architettura, sia storica che contemporanea, grazie soprattutto agli interventi di alta qualità dell'attivissimo Iranian Cultural Heritage Organisation. In un paese sospeso tra arcaismo e modernità, nell'ottobre 2002 il Premio Aga Khan per l'Architettura ha riunito in un seminario internazionale a Yazd e Teheran specialisti della conversazione dei beni storici e varie figure di spicco dell'architettura del Teheran Museum of Contemporary Art.
