Condizione: very good. Amsterdam: Elsevier, 1974. Hardcover. Dustjacket, viii,212 pp. Index. Dustjacket with tear. - The Ciba Foundation was officially opened on 22 June 1949 at 41 Portland Place, London. Its mission is to promote inter- national cooperation in medical and chemical research. During the 25 years that have elapsed since then, 20000 scientists visiting London have stayed at the Foundation and about 5000 of them have participated in the 200 influential scientific meetings which the Director and his staff have organized. The subjects of the meetings have ranged from the estima- tion of hormone concentrations to the opportunities for international cooperation in Africa, from the mechanisms for peptide transport to transcultural psychiatry, and from the structure of chromatin to the future of mankind. The Ciba Foundation, supported by the CIBA chemical company (now CIBA- GEIGY) based in Basle, has com- manded the respect and admiration of the international scientific community since its earliest days. This book is not a mere chronicle of events at the Foundation. It analyses the Foundation's influence both on the progress of biomedical research- especially in the fields of endocrinology and immunology-during exciting years of development, and on the whole way in which research conferences are conceived of and conducted all over the world.
