"The underlying reasons for seeking an effective method of parallelism in information processing systems and storage are manifold. It is already becoming difficult to increase the speed of a single processor and retain commercial viability. Several processors, carrying out a single task will be the only way forward to greatly enhance performance. Realisation of computer interlinking in terms of local area networks or wider links involving communications presents several problems-of hardware design, of implementation, of flow control, and of data routing. Clearly, an adequate theoretcial basis for parallelism in information processing systems, and a review of the mathematical progress of the last few years, are both urgently needed. The papers contained in these problems and lay stress on the communication requirements inherent in the development of all types of distributed computer systems." c4. Book. Codice articolo 4703
