De nieuwe, wetenschappelijke serie Van Gogh Studies biedt een internationaal podium voor het onderzoek naar de laat 19de-eeuwse, West-Europese kunstgeschiedenis. De bijdragen richten zich op het leven en werk van Vincent van Gogh en tijdgenoten. Zij zijn geschreven door internationaal gerenommeerde onderzoekers en bieden een rijk geschakeerd beeld van het vakgebied.
Het eerste deel toont de veelzijdigheid van de serie Eminence grise. Robert Herbert presenteert een belangrijke studie over decoratieve kunsten; het functioneren van de 19de-eeuwse Franse kunstmarkt en het Salon-systeem staat centraal in de bijdrage van Robert Jensen en David Galenson, terwijl Elise Eckermann, June Hargrove en Caroline Boyle-Turner opmerkelijke deelstudies leveren over Gauguin als schilder en beeldhouwer.
