Ever since the first pacemaker implantation a little more than 50 years ago, the pacemaker has developed from a simple piece of technology into a multi-programmable device with hundreds or even thousands of programming combinations. In the United States, approximately 200,000 new patients have a pacemaker implanted every year, and the number is increasing, due to both the aging population and new indications. Care for these patients includes not only diagnosis and implantation of the pacemaker system but also periodic check-ups of the implanted system using technical measurements and clinically well-grounded programming to assure optimal treatment.
