Arthur Benjamin Reeve was an American mystery writer. He is most known for establishing the series character Professor Craig Kennedy, also known as "The American Sherlock Holmes," and his Dr. Watson-like sidekick Walter Jameson, a newspaper reporter, for 18 detective books. Reeve is best known for the 82 Craig Kennedy stories published in Cosmopolitan magazine between 1910 and 1918. These were compiled into books, and in the third collection, the short stories were published as episodic novels. Craig Kennedy Stories, a 12-volume compilation, was produced in 1918 and reissued all of Reeve's novels to date as a matched set. Reeve, who was born in Brooklyn, graduated from Princeton and then went to New York Law School. He worked as an editor and journalist before becoming famous for the first Craig Kennedy story in 1911. Raised in Brooklyn, he spent the majority of his professional life at several addresses around Long Island Sound. In 1932, he moved to New Jersey (Trenton) to be closer to his alma mater, Princeton. He died in Trenton in 1936. Beginning with The Exploits of Elaine (1914), Reeve wrote screenplays. His film career was most active from 1919 to 1920, when he was credited with seven films, the majority of which were serials, three of which starred Harry Houdini.
