Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in Cheetham Hill, Manchester England on the 24th of November, 1849. She was educated at The Select Seminary for Young Ladies and Gentlemen till she was fifteen years old and was forced to discontinue when the family ironmongery business run by her mother failed. The family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee and here, Hodgson started writing to supplement her family income. When her mother died in 1870, Hodgson assumed full responsibility for the family. Hodgson’s great success as a fiction novelist, children’s author and playwright ensured that she had to travel back and forth quite regularly between her homes in England and North America. Hodgson died in her Long Island, New York home, in 1924 and is widely remembered for her trio of classic children’s novels like Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911) However, she was also a popular novelist for adults.
