I saggi in questo volume modificato cercano di comprendere le ramificazioni regionali e internazionali dell'ondata di manifestazioni di protesta che ha attraversato l'Asia occidentale e il Nord Africa nei primi anni 2010, sia sul campo che online. L'insoddisfazione per la repressione politica e la corruzione, le difficoltà economiche e le disuguaglianze e il desiderio di libertà e democrazia hanno avuto un ruolo nelle rivolte della primavera araba. Ha deposto dittature di vecchia data, inaugurando un periodo di insicurezza e instabilità che avrebbe conseguenze a lungo termine per l'economia politica e le relazioni internazionali della regione. Sebbene le proteste siano finite, l'eredità di quell'era turbolenta continuerà a vivere, in particolare nell'accelerazione del cambiamento e della trasformazione regionale.
