The new building project for the Museum of Contemporary Art, begun in 1992, was founded upon a new museum concept, taking its point of departure from the design and architecture of the building. From its inception the museum has been described as a versatile institution intended to serve, as a cultural activity center, to include a multitude of interdisciplinary art programs which cannot simply be divided into traditional collection and exhibition activities. From the outset this museum has been seen as a stage for lectures and discussions, for public events, theater, music, films, dance and literature, in addition to its role as a focus for visual culture, Contemporary art today is multifarious. In addition to painting, sculpture and graphic art, it includes installations, photo-based art, performance art, conceptual art, electronic art, media art and environmental art. The tight boundaries between these different art forms have had to make way for the broader concepts of visual culture. There has been a desire to make the museum as a vivid cultural center with pluralistic values, open to as wide an audience as possible. A place whose strength, however, is the collection brought about by the museum as an institution. In order to raise the level of appreciation for art, especially the art of our time, we need places where a common audience can easily encounter works of art. Such a museum, in turn, is necessary to advance the state of contemporary art. Thus a building where the museum can fulfill this task is essential.
