The experimental teaching of materials science and engineering (MSE) is important because the comprehensive applications and the practical knowledge of the professionals are not only an important way for undergraduate students to grasp the knowledge but also to understand the purpose of the study. In order to cultivate students' ability to solve complex engineering problems, more comprehensive experiments should be designed.Besides the essential basic experiments in the first few chapters, most of the experiments designed in this book are comprehensive, hence the title. This book breaks the boundaries in the experimental courses of MSE. The experiments in this book are modularized into five parts, including preliminary exploration of materials science and engineering, fundamentals of chemistry and crystallography, material properties, material preparation and treatment, and material applications. Besides the experiments, the appendices will describe the most relevant aspects of experimental safety, error, and data presentation in a general way. The contents and requirements of the experimental report are suggested. At the end of each chapter, a list of books, journal articles, and websites is provided for extended reading on the topics covered in the chapter.This book covers the main contents of experimental courses of MSE. The experiments cover the forefront of scientific research and the materials industry with appropriate modification. It intends to serve as a textbook for undergraduate students and aims to help teachers find a wide enough variety of experiments to construct in an experimental course.

The authors all come from the teaching laboratory of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). Most experiments were designed or modified from classic experiments by the authors during their teaching stint.

Professor Fei Ye is the chief editor of the book and is responsible for the compilation and review of the book. He studied at Tsinghua University from 1994 to 2004 and successively received a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a PhD degree in materials science and engineering. He then worked at National Institute for Materials Science, Japan, and became a regular researcher in 2008. Professor Fei Ye worked at Dalian University of Technology as a full professor from 2010 to 2018. After that, he joined Southern University of Science and Technology in July 2018. Professor Fei Ye has taught the course "Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering" for years and has a vast teaching experience.

Chengzhu Liao is an associate research fellow. She received a PhD degree in Materials Science from City University of Hong Kong in 2011.

Hua Cheng is an associate research fellow. She received a PhD degree in materials science from City University of Hong Kong in 2011.

Jianbo Zhang is a technician. He received a master's degree in material physics and chemistry from Shenzhen University in 2011.

Haiou Wang is a technician. She received a master's degree in materials science and engineering from Tsinghua University in 2009.

Yanyan Li is a technician. She received a master's degree in physics and chemistry from Xiamen University in 2013.

Huili Li is a technician. She received a master's degree in biological materials from Shenzhen University in 2013.

Jing Ming is a technician. He received a master's degree in materials processing engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2011.
