Franz Liszt war zeitlebens Schubert-Fan. Dessen Lieder trug er bei seinen Konzerten in Transkriptionen für Klavier solo mit so großem Effekt vor, dass auch die Verleger aufmerksam wurden. So erschienen ab 1838 zahlreiche Liszt-Schubert-Bearbeitungen im Druck – gerne auch mit leichteren Alternativen zu den schwersten Stellen, um ein breiteres Publikum zu gewinnen. Dass dies gelang, kann man heute an den zahlreichen Auflagen und Nachdrucken erkennen, die von diesen Stücken bereits zu Liszts Lebzeiten in ganz Europa erschienen. Mit der Urtextausgabe von „Aufenthalt“ startet der G. Henle Verlag eine Reihe von Einzelausgaben dieser faszinierenden Zeugnisse von Liszts Schubert-Begeisterung. Herausgeberin Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl sichtete dafür die Überlieferung, den Fingersatz lieferte kein Geringerer als Evgeny Kissin, der auch bei der Auswahl der Titel unterstützte.
