Variationen über ein beliebtes Thema, meist zeitgenössischen Opern entnommen, waren Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts äußerst populär. Auch der junge Beethoven trug einiges zu diesem Genre bei. Ein konkreter Anlass für die Komposition der drei Variationszyklen für Violoncello und Klavier - sie verarbeiten zwei Themen aus Mozarts 'Zauberflöte' und eines aus Händels Oratorium 'Judas Maccabäus' - ist nicht bekannt. An der Anzahl der zeitgenössischen Nachdrucke lässt sich aber ablesen, dass sie sich von Anfang an hoher Beliebtheit erfreuten. Unsere Revision beruht auf neuen Erkenntnissen aus dem Kritischen Bericht der Beethoven-Gesamtausgabe (erschienen 2008).

Even the young Beethoven made several contributions to this genre. We do not know of any concrete occasion for the composition of the three cycles of Variations for Violoncello and Piano - they are on two themes from Mozart's 'The Magic Flute' and one from Handel's oratorio 'Judas Maccabaeus'. The number of reproductions at that time does, however, reveal that they were very popular right from the beginning. Our revision is based on new findings contained in the Critical Report of the Beethoven Complete Edition.; Les variations sur un thème plaisant, puisé le plus souvent dans les opéras contemporains, étaient des plus populaires à la fin du XVIIIe. Le jeune Beethoven lui aussi apporte sa contribution à ce genre.
