Rund zehn Jahre bevor Johannes Brahms seine späten, melancholischen Klavierstücke komponierte, entstanden 1879 die beiden rhapsodien op. 79 - zwei ausgesprochen leidenschaftliche und vergleichsweise umfangreiche werke. Brahms spricht der rekonvaleszenten Clara Schumann gegenüber mit gewohntem understatement von zwei Stücken, ''an denen du dich Recht austoben kannst und auch erproben, ob denn die kur auch genützt hat''. Wir möchten eher der brahms-freundin Elisabeth von Herzogenberg zustimmen: ''daß das G Moll Mein liebling ist, macht mich aber nicht unempfindlich Gegen die kraftvoll stachelige schönheit des H Moll''. Die beiden beliebten werke erscheinen nun revidierten auf der basis der neuen brahms-gesamtausgabe.

In 1879, about ten years before Johannes Brahms composed his late, melancholic piano pieces, he wrote the two Rhapsodies op. 79 - two markedly passionate and comparatively extensive works. In a letter to the convalescent Clara Schumann, Brahms spokein a typically understated fashion about the two pieces "with which you can really run riot and test whether the course of treatment has actually had any effect". We prefer to agree with Brahms' friend Elisabeth von Herzogenberg: "the fact that the gminor is my favourite does not make me insensitive towards the intensely prickly beauty of the one in b minor". Both of these popular works have now been revised on the basis of the new Brahms Complete Edition.
