Most balance books promise results in 28 days. The research says 24 weeks. This book tells you the truth.
You noticed it on a curb, or turning too quickly, or reaching into a high cupboard. Nothing dramatic happened. But you noticed — and after that, you kept noticing.
Here is what almost nobody tells you: the careful adaptations you make afterward are what make balance worse. Shorter steps. Stiffer hips. Declining the invitation with stairs. Every one feels like prudence. Every one removes the practice your balance system needs.
Balance is not a fixed quantity that drains away with age. It is a trainable skill — and of everything that has been tested head-to-head for reducing falls in older adults, tai chi has performed best.
A randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine followed 670 adults aged 70 and over, all of whom had already fallen or had impaired mobility. Over 24 weeks, the tai chi group had 58% fewer falls than a stretching control group.
But the number that should decide your choice is the other one: tai chi produced 31% fewer falls than a full conventional exercise program — balance work, strength, aerobics and flexibility combined, same hours, same instructors. That is the comparison that justifies this book instead of a general exercise guide.
This book also tells you what the research does not show, including a trial where the same program delivered remotely produced no reduction in falls at all — and what that means for anyone learning from a book. You will not find that admission in the 28-day plans.
The movements come from the simplified 24-posture Yang-style form, standardised in 1956 and taught worldwide. Every claim is sourced. Nothing is oversold.
If you have started planning the stairs, this is where you start undoing that.
Always consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program. Chapter Four sets out who should seek medical advice first.
