Amy Winehouse released two albums in her lifetime. Since her death, everybody has owned a piece of her.
An estate, a record label, two feature films, a statue, a hologram tour that never happened and a market in her likeness have all claimed her songs, her face and her story. This book goes back to the one part of her she chose to leave: the recordings.
Amy Winehouse, Song by Song takes all fifty-one in order, one entry each: who played, where and when, what the song does and what was happening around it. It runs from Frank, the jazz debut she half disowned, through Back to Black, the record that turned her life into daily news, to Lioness, the posthumous album she never sequenced. The B-sides, covers, duets and demos are here too.
Five essays carry the argument between the songs. They move from the Anglo-Jewish north London that gave her the songbook, to the Daptone band and the analogue sound that made her a star, to the camera phones that recorded her decline. The last essay asks the question in the title and names the one kind of ownership that was hers alone: deciding what was finished and what was released.
The book ends with the confession said on the Day of Atonement, set against her songs.
An independent critical study in the tradition of Ian MacDonald's Revolution in the Head, published for the twentieth anniversary of Back to Black. Not authorised by the estate. No lyrics are reproduced.
