Sinossi

A new book by our friend Muç Xhepa: On the Other Side of the Ride: Uber Stories You Were Never Meant to Hear. But which is this “other side”? Is it the one of the homelands, filled with memories from his hometown, Elbasan, or the one where he now lives and works, in Washington? Or is it the side of the events he narrates—told almost at the speed of his car, which he drives for “Uber” services—where he encounters both the ordinary and the unusual? These moments appear before him, yet through associations of ideas they remind him of distant events in his homeland, of dramas that continue to haunt him.

The “other side” is known to have yet another side, and in between lies time, flowing like a river, as the ancient philosophers said. But no—time, for Muç Xhepa, is more like the road along which his “Uber” travels through the night. Like passing lights, various feelings, events, conversations, and who knows what else flare up and fade away, revealing a world full of absurdity. As he drives, his eyes meet in the rearview mirror with those of a stranger—someone he will take somewhere, yet who also takes him somewhere else: into a forgotten vision, a troubling obsession. It begins to feel as though we are traveling with the haunting “Uber” of memory.

The world itself has undergone a strange transformation. Former persecutors of the East—or the sons of those who once opposed capitalism—have now become hybrid capitalists. They, too, have fled to the West, yet carry a certain nostalgia for the system they left behind. At times, they even seem to take pleasure in the current unrest, if not quietly encourage it. And so, if you step into Muç Xhepa’s metaphorical “Uber,” you will hear conversations about our present, here and elsewhere. You may find yourself thinking of something entirely different.

And in between it all, there remains hope for something better.
