Fire is one of the very few engineering problems in which the thing being studied reshapes the conditions that govern it. A structural load does not grow because the beam deflected. A fire heats its own fuel, alters its own ventilation, and changes its own chemistry as it develops, so the equations that describe it at one minute are not the equations that describe it at the next. That feedback is what makes fire behavior difficult, and it is why the subject rewards rigor over rule of thumb.
It is also where most practitioners are left without support. Officers and investigators are trained extensively in what fire does and given comparatively little of the quantitative apparatus that explains why. Engineers are trained in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics and are rarely shown how those subjects combine into a defensible prediction of what a burning room will do to the people inside it. The consequence appears in real work: an analyst who cannot say whether an observed burn pattern is consistent with the timeline being proposed, or a designer who selects a design fire because it appeared in a previous project rather than because it can be justified from the fuel package actually present.
This handbook develops the subject from first principles and carries every principle through to a number. Combustion chemistry establishes what a fuel can release; thermochemistry converts that into energy; heat transfer determines how the energy reaches unburned material; ignition theory determines whether that material lights; flame spread determines how quickly the burning area grows; and heat release rate assembles all of it into the single curve on which nearly every subsequent calculation depends.
