BALANCE HORMONES • REGULATE BLOOD SUGAR • OPTIMIZE INSULIN SENSITIVITY
A groundbreaking handbook for activating your body's naturally occurring weight-loss hormones without relying on medication, from the former director at Novo Nordisk, the pharmaceutical company behind Wegovy and Ozempic
“The most important GLP-1 conversation no one is having.”—David Perlmutter, MD, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Grain Brain and Brain Defenders
In 2022, the world changed drastically when GLP-1 medications became popular in the market. But with prices soaring and production restricted, the benefits of these drugs are not accessible to all. The good news is the major component in these drugs mimics the effect of one of the body's very own natural weight-loss hormones—so why not let your body do the work?
For more than twenty years, Dr. Anette Sams has worked as a pharmaceutical researcher—including six years at Novo Nordisk, where she specialized in and led research on blood sugar, diabetes, and inflammation—and she's now sharing her expertise worldwide. In Let Your Body Do the Work, Sams explains how the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone works in the body and shares practical, everyday tips on how to activate it through nutrition and lifestyle tweaks.
This powerful hormone can not only help to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, but also regulate blood sugar and appetite, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, support satiety, and support natural prevention of common diseases. An instant bestseller in Denmark, Let Your Body Do the Work is your resource for accessing the benefits of healthy, active weight-loss hormones without the hefty price tag.
“It should never be easier to get expensive injections than to understand our own hormones. The world needs both medication and education.”—Anette Sams

Chapter 1
Meet Your Capable Body
My country of Denmark as I knew it changed in December 2022. Only a few years earlier, the United States had debuted the medication that would take the world by storm, and now packs of the world’s first plausible weight-loss medicine were flying off the shelves at pharmacies from Ringkøbing to Rønne. Wegovy, Novo Nordisk’s brilliant replica of one of the body’s natural weight-loss hormones, and the medication I’ll refer to most here as it’s the one I worked directly with, appeared like a rainbow on a rainy day. And for the way the world took to it, you’d believe that a pot of gold awaited those who could find the end of the rainbow.
In the story of Novo Nordisk and Wegovy, the rainbow did in fact lead to gold. But for Wegovy users, the prize is a different story. Rather than a pot of cold cash awaiting them at the end of the rainbow, it’s a dream finally realized. For millions of people around the world, their deepest wish appears to have been answered. With a click in the abdomen using a small pen, they are able to tame their constant hunger, which normally holds them captive, much like an unassailable dictator. At the same time, they’re able to fulfill their desire to rid themselves of extra pounds around the waist, which despite restraint, constant deprivation, long plodding runs, and trips to the gym never quite seem to disappear for good.
The impact of Wegovy usage is tangible. Supermarkets report declining food sales and restaurants are serving smaller portions, while airlines spot an opportunity to save on fuel and improve their carbon footprint. People around the world face a slimmer—and perhaps healthier—future.
But with great discoveries come great dilemmas. This is also the case when looking at the success of Wegovy. Who needs the drug, and who is entitled to it? Who pays for it? There are those who steadfastly debate that obesity can be solved by riding your bike and practicing moderation in your eating choices; on the other side are those who can prove that appetite regulation and satiation are not simply a matter of willpower.
As a scientist, I’m not sure it’s my place to posit an answer to any of those questions. But for me, there is no debate about sharing the knowledge and research on how to activate your naturally occurring GLP-1. It is up to you (and ideally your doctor) whether you want to use it. For my part, now that these medications are out in the world, I simply want to ensure that everyone can find the answers and education they need.
In addition to the ethical questions surrounding the use of Wegovy, the world’s primary care physicians had to cope with the long line of people suddenly wanting the medication; elsewhere, second-party sellers popped up promising the same benefits with less regulation. The question raised here is perfectly banal: How can doctors and medical professionals ensure that treatment is carried out as the prescription demands—for Wegovy and other weight-loss medications to be used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise, as intended by its creators? In addition, who determines what the healthy diet that should accompany Wegovy consists of?
Wegovy gives rise to many questions, but no matter how much we wrestle with them, the medication continues to strengthen its presence around the world, and new generations of weight-loss medication are already on their way. But after decades researching in this space, I want people to understand that they have the tools to mimic the changes offered by these drugs at their fingertips, for a fraction of the price. It’s time for everyone to learn about the fantastic and perfectly natural hormone underlying the astronomical success of these drugs—and it’s created right in your own body.
The name of this hormone will tie your tongue in knots. Try it yourself: “glucagon-like peptide 1” . . . more commonly known as GLP-1. This is one of the hormones that balances your blood sugar, your appetite, and your weight. And the fantastic part is that your body can produce it on its own.
When it comes to your health, GLP-1 is a pack leader. When you eat good food that stimulates your body to produce the hormone, other hormones also join in, creating your own “health team.” As the body continues to activate numerous other health switches, a positive feedback loop is created, laying a path to health, weight loss, and a body working in harmony. Because you can let your body do the work! That is, when you support it and get out of its way.
You probably think I’m now going to say that Wegovy is a pile of junk that should be chucked in the garbage in favor of the “natural” path to achieve a flat stomach. Nothing could be further from the truth. Wegovy is a brilliant quantum leap, and as a society, we have been in desperate need of a drug to break the obesity epidemic ravaging large parts of the world. But it is up to you and your doctor whether you choose the natural hormone, the artificially produced one, or both. My position is simply this: No one who seeks knowledge should be left without it.
This book is all about the body’s natural weight-loss hormones, and it is for those who want to educate themselves and find the freedom to take charge of their own health. It’s for those who believe in their capable body and know that health is never black and white. It’s written in a scientist’s voice, and from a scientist’s perspective, because the information is the same whether you are reading this to kick-start your weight-loss journey, manage your type 2 diabetes, pursue the benefits of these popular weight-loss medications without the price tag and potential side effects, or simply educate yourself on a healthier way to live.
I am not writing a book about the hormone that inspired Novo Nordisk’s talented experts for fun. I am doing it because I feel obligated to share this knowledge with you, and with the world. If you eat food, and if you want to learn a little more about what you can achieve when you let your body do the work, you will benefit from it.
Now, let’s move quickly on to what so much of the hype around Wegovy centers on: weight.
