The Rex rabbit originated from a naturally occurring genetic mutation rather than deliberate human design. This mutation first appeared in France in 1919 within a population of wild gray rabbits. Among an otherwise ordinary litter, several rabbits exhibited an unusual coat that immediately distinguished them from normal rabbits. Instead of the typical fur structure composed of long guard hairs overlaying a dense undercoat, these rabbits possessed fur of uniform length that stood upright and felt remarkably soft to the touch. The mutation affected the growth cycle and structure of the hair shaft, creating a coat unlike any previously recognized in domestic rabbits.
