The Chinese are known for a variety of things, among them are proverbs, dumplings, chopsticks, massive armies, ancient teachings, and a Great Wall. In 1941, China became host to a group of American civilian pilots, who were also known for a variety of things, among them aviator skills beyond compare, shenanigans, handsomely decorated planes, camaraderie, and victories. The proverb above caught my attention as I was preparing information for this story. When I volunteered to write about the American Volunteer Group (AVG) Flying Tigers, I had no idea who they were, or what they accomplished so to say now that I have learned “a lot” is an understatement. I have become totally immersed in their story. With so many personalities and achievements to write about, it was a challenge to establish a starting point. I enjoyed the style and swagger that LIFE magazine was able to capture in the 1942 article about the team, and their focus was on the pilots. But the behind-the-scenes characters, the support personnel such as medics, cooks, aviation mechanics, navigators, and other team members received limited attention, so they will become the focus of this view of the Flying Tigers.
