Generation X is the name chosen for the cohort of individuals born between the years 1965 – 1980. Called by some the “Forgotten Generation,” and the “middle child” by others, they are considered resourceful, independent, self-reliant, creators of the DIY movement, and basically anti-fads and fashion. 84 million babies were born into Generation X, with a population of 88.5 million Gen Xers in the US at the time of the 2020 Census.
They saw the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the first space shuttle in 1981 and the tragic explosion of Challenger five years later. They survived two energy crises, 1970s and 1980s, all while being exhorted by the U.S. Government to “Just say NO” to illegal drug use, during the height of the War on Drugs.
Profoundly affected by the 9-11 attacks, the perspective towards military service and national security among Generation X sends a message of communication and collaboration among the branches of the service, making the military more effective and efficient, even if the number of individual personnel is less.
As leaders, there is a sense of pride and purpose similar to their Silent grandparents, that is a unique quality of Generation X. Heroic acts, servant leaders, and selfless determination are evident in each of the following true stories about members of Generation X.
